Before leaving Sopot we charged the Tesla to 100%, counting on a calm, speed-limit drive getting us all the way to grandma's (about 380 km). The plan was simple: on the way back we'd travel in two cars. I was going to stop to charge, while J would head home in the Octavia with our cat, Mysza. The plan was for her to shut him in the bedroom while the luggage was carried in, so our curious furball wouldn't seize a moment of distraction and escape onto the staircase.
At the start, the Tesla's navigation predicted we'd arrive with 5% battery. During the drive the estimate optimistically rose to 8%, then slowly started to drop – although for the first 100 km I wasn't exactly sticking to the limits, but going a touch faster, +5/10 km/h. In the end it showed 3%. Around Modlin, with the battery at 16–17%, the navigation suddenly announced that we wouldn't make it and absolutely had to stop at the Supercharger in Ząbki. I thought to myself: "We'll get there easily, there should be some 5–6% left over." But it was 10 November, maybe traffic in Warsaw, maybe not worth the risk? I looked at J, and her face made it perfectly clear that we were going to Ząbki. 😄
On arrival at the Supercharger the navigation promised we'd have 4% battery. And indeed – it was 4%, mainly because the system had heated the battery for fast charging. Sadly – completely unnecessarily.
I decided to check how much energy we'd use on the stretch from Ząbki to Karczew. It came to 7% of the battery, and that was a longer route than from the point where the navigation forced us off to the Supercharger. At that point we had 13% battery, so we could easily have reached our destination. But I trusted the navigation.
Fast charging? Sure! After five minutes? Yeah, right... Something at the Supercharger clearly wasn't working. Maybe it was how busy the station was (almost all the stalls were taken), or maybe I picked the wrong charger? In the end we only added 10% at 35 kW – which is about as much as the battery heating had used up. If I'd just driven straight to Karczew, I'd have charged in Otwock at 150 kW. Which is exactly what I did on the way back from grandma's.
Well, these things happen. Next time I'll trust my own experience more than the Tesla's calculations. 🙃
